Jonathan Green Week in March

March 1-8 will be "Jonathan Green Week" and will feature a multimedia tribute to the well-known artist. Click here to read the article which appeared in the Post and Courier on January 27.

The John's Island Regional Library will host "Seeking the Spirit: Poetry and Jazz Inspired by Jonathan Green's Painting" on Thursday, March 6, from 6:30-8:00 p.m. To find out more about this program, click here. It's Tax Time--Need Help?

Interested in free tax preparation assistance? Several branches of the Charleston County Public Library are offering help through a project coordinated with the VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) Program and the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP). Assistance will be available in Spanish at two branches: Cooper River Memorial and John's Island Regional. The programs target low- to moderate-income residents with AARP also giving special attention to helping residents over 60 years old. For additional tax assistance, you can contact these organization directly: VITA at 965-4037 or 2-1-1, or AARP at 1-888-227-7669.

The Future of Peace and Security on the Korean Peninsula and Northeast Asia

On Tuesday, January 29, 2008 at 6:00 p.m., Dr. Balbina Hwang, Senior Special Advisor to Ambassador Christopher Hill, Assistant Secretary for East Asian and Pacific Affairs at the US State Department, will share her perspectives on the situation on the Korean peninsula and in Northeast Asia. Family Movie Fun


Bring your whole family and join us on Saturday, January 19, at 2:00 p.m. for our Saturday Movie Matinee featuring Hairspray. An overweight high school student pursues her dream of being on a teen dance program. The movie stars John Travolta, Queen Latifah, and Michelle Pfeiffer. This movie is rated PG and is 117 minutes long.

Free Computer Classes!


The John's Island Regional Library will teach the following computer classes in February 2008 for adults and young adults:

Computer Basics
Monday, February 4 from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m.
Registration starts 1/21
This class provides a basic introduction to the personal computer and its parts. Learn how to use the mouse and navigate the computer screen. There is time for hands-on practice. No computer experience is necessary.

Word Basics
Tuesday, February 5 from 10:30 a.m. – 12 Noon
Registration starts 1/22
Introduction to the basic tools of Microsoft Word. Learn how to enter and format text, change margins and line spacing, and copy and paste text. Saving and printing tips will also be discussed. Prerequisite: Some experience using a mouse will be helpful.

Keyboard Basics
Monday, February 11 from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m.
Registration starts 1/28
Basic orientation to using the computer keyboard. Learn to be a more efficient keyboarder. General instruction and hands-on practice. No computer experience is necessary.

Excel Basics
Tuesday, February 12 from 10:30 a.m. – 12 noon
Registration starts 1/29
An introduction to spreadsheets using Microsoft Excel. This session provides a basic overview and common uses for spreadsheets. Learn basic Excel functions and build a simple budget spreadsheet. Prerequisite: Word Basics or some experience using MS Word will be helpful.

Files and Folders: File Organization and Management
Monday, February 25 from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m.
Registration starts 2/11
Learn how to organize your computer files more effectively. Basics concepts include: creating a file or document, creating folders, naming folders and saving document in a folder and copying files from one floppy disc to another. Prerequisite: Computer Basics will be helpful.

Excel: Beyond the Basics
Tuesday, February 26 from 10:30 a.m. – 12 noon
Registration starts 2/12
A follow-up session to Excel Basics. Learn some additional features of the program, such as sorting and filtering. Learn how to use additional types of formulas. Prerequisite: Excel Basics or some experience using MS Excel will be helpful.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Display and Movie


Bring the family and join us on Tuesday, January 15, at 6:00 p.m. for a film in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday. This hour long film provides an historical overview of the struggle for racial equality in America and focuses on the life of Dr. King using rare and largely unseen film footage and photographs.


The library will be closed on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Monday, January 21st.
